  • Launch “Carbon Club” which will be a loyalty scheme to encourage people to use public transport
  • Carbon Club was launched at NXEC
  • Develop a leadership role in Climate Change by working in partnership with government, NGOs and other businesses

Coach Goals and Progress

  • Maintain current baseline fuel efficiency
  • Performance on a gCO2 per passenger kilometre has increased slightly – in 2006 it was 29 and in 2007 it was 30
  • Introduce recycling schemes at all operational sites
  • Incorporate environment into Digbeth Coach Station design
  • Environmental design has been incorporated into the design of Digbeth Coach Station and we hope to achieve ‘excellent’ rating under the BREEAM scheme
  • Achieve excellent rating in BREEAM assessment at Digbeth Coach Station
  • Work with our supply chain to reduce the weight of our coaches by 1 tonne


Bus Goals and Progress

  •  Maintain current baseline fuel efficiency
  • There has been a slight worsening of baseline fuel efficiency for reasons explained
  • Reduce site electricity use by 5% and maintain gas consumption at current level
  • Undertake diesel-hybrid trial
  • Travel London is working with TfL on a trial of 5 diesel-hybrid vehicles
  • Increase recycling of non-hazardous waste to 20%
  • Review biodiesel fuel
  • We pulled out of a proposed trial of 30% biodiesel due to concerns about the environmental and broader sustainability benefits
  • Decrease water consumption by 10%
  • Seek further reductions in site energy usage
  • TWM reduced site energy use at garages by 28.5%


Train Goals and Progress

  • Improve fuel efficiency by 5%
  • We achieved this: NXEA reduced total fleet energy use by 6% and c2c improved efficiency by nearly 20%.
  • Improve train fuel efficiency by 5% over the next 2 years
  • Improve energy use at stations
  • There was a small reduction in site energy use of 3%
  • Develop plans for onsite renewable energy generation at 4 ‘green stations’

North America Goals and Progress

  • To look at initiatives to reduce exhaust emissions of the fleet across all operations
  • Reviewed options for retrofitting pollutant abatement technology to school buses


ALSA Goals and Progress

Goals set for 2007 Progress during 2007
  • Development and implementation of a unified Environmental Management System for ALSA
  • ALSA have developed a company wide environmental management system
  • Achieve certification to ISO 1400 at Irun-Tuy franchise and for bus transport services in Leon
  • Certification was achieved
  • Partnership with different universities and institutions to carry out research projects in environmental issues relating to the transport industry
  • Partnership is ongoing
  • Internal communication campaigns targeted at promoting energy saving and environmental awareness
  • Developed an internal communications programme on environment
  • Analysis across all ALSA depots targeted at minimizing potential environmental risks
  • Reviewed environmental risks at garages
