Good maintenance is essential in minimising pollution. In 2007 we had only one failure for exhaust emission testing undertaken by the Vehicle and Operator Service Agency (VOSA) on our bus and coach fleet. The total emissions of local air pollutants from our bus operations continues to decline due to sustained investment in new vehicles (see charts).

Whilst we continue to invest in new engines which deliver improved environmental performance, an equally effective way to reduce emissions is by speeding up bus and coaches. The basic facts concerning emissions are similar to those relating to fuel consumption – optimum performance is achieved not at slow or fast speeds, but in the middle of the range (see chart above). This explains the important environmental benefit of bus and coach prioritisation.

The decrease in local air pollution from our train operations is due to a change in our operations resulting from refranchising. We are committed to playing a leading role in tackling the key environmental issues impacting the rail industry and ensure our views are fully represented through industry groups such as the Railway Forum and the Association of Train Operating Companies.
