I joined National Express UK Bus in September 2011 as a Graduate Management Trainee after I graduated in Law from Keele University. I decided to pursue a career with National Express because of the variety of areas and skills that were covered as part of the graduate scheme, and the size of the company.
During the graduate scheme I was based at Birmingham depots, and I was surprised to see how much ‘behind the scenes’ work goes on at the garages to keep the buses and drivers on the road, this was something I took for granted as a frequent passenger before. The graduate scheme covered all business functions such as finance, health & safety, marketing to name a few and was a warts and all indepth analysis of the business.
When the graduate scheme finished I was offered the position of Assistant Operations Manager, based at Birmingham Central garage. I then moved to Walsall garage to develop my skills and in December 2014 I was promoted to Operations Manager at Wolverhampton garage, which is the second biggest depot in our bus business.
Every day is different managing such a large number of staff and working with the general public. Employee engagement is always at the forefront of everything I do in my job, ensuring my staff are kept up to date with developments across the business.
Alongside my role I sit on a group called Opportunity Now which looks at female representation and development in our business. I also attend meetings held by the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, which helps me to understand, share and tackle problems which are present at most businesses in the area.
My favourite thing about working for National Express is the people, everyone is so passionate about what they do and constantly strive to improve the business.
