National Express' recycling brings a smile to Age Concern day centre users
Age Concern Birmingham has received a donation of over 1,000 cups from National Express for use in their day centres and lunch clubs across the city. For one centre it was the first delivery of new teacups in 15 years.
Birmingham based National Express decided to recycle the cups, which bear an outdated company logo, rather than throw them away. It was decided to donate the cups to Age Concern centres at Kitts Green, Sutton Coldfield, Hall Green, Castle Vale and New Oscott to allow the centres to retire their old tea cups.
On receiving the donation, Elaine Jones, Director of Operations at Age Concern Birmingham said: “As you can imagine, the one thing we go through a lot of here is cups of tea! So this is an ideal gift from National Express. We are very grateful for their kind donation.”
Age Concern Birmingham provides day care services for 364 elderly people each week, offering a wide range of activities such as art, knitting, bingo and keep fit in a warm and friendly environment. In addition, the charity’s lunch clubs also provide cooked two-course meals to 365 elderly people each week. The cups will be distributed to all six day centres and four lunch clubs run by Age Concern in Birmingham and will benefit over 700 people each week.
James Donnan, Head of Corporate Communications at National Express commented: “Age Concern Birmingham does a really great job helping older people in Birmingham lead more independent and healthy lives. I’m thrilled they’ll be able to make good use of the mugs. I understand that some of the cups and mugs at the Hurstway day centre in New Oscott were over 15 years old and as you can imagine the new ones brought a smile to the faces of the service users. We just didn’t want to throw away 1,000 cups and this is the perfect way to recycle and donate something that will actually be used every day.”
