Armed Forces Day - National Express discount launch
Out in force to support service personnel
National Express is today (Friday, June 5) launching a travel discount to help people get out in force and show their support for the UK’s Armed Forces this summer.
The UK’s largest coach operator is offering 50 per cent off travel to Guildford to help as many people as possible attend the Armed Forces Day National Event which takes place in the town on Saturday, June 27.
In launching the offer, the coach company hopes to make travel to the event even more affordable to ensure personnel from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force receive the show of support they deserve.
National Express already offer serving personnel 60 per cent off travel – the largest discount of its kind in the UK - through the Defence Discount Service, and the 50 per cent discount is to ensure everyone else can take advantage of unbeatable value travel on the big day.
As part of its ‘Military Promise’ through the Armed Forces Covenant, National Express also offers guaranteed job interviews for veterans with PCV Driving licences for its driving vacancies.
Mark Lancaster, Minister for Defence Personnel and Veterans said: “It is wonderful to see a great British business such as National Express lead the way in bringing people together to mark Armed Forces Day.
“National Express have for years supported the Armed Forces through discounted travel to Service personnel and their guaranteed job interview scheme.
“I would also encourage other businesses to follow National Express’s example and do all they can to ensure that the Armed Forces Community are not disadvantaged by military life. “
Tom Stables, Managing Director National Express UK Coach said: “Armed Forces Day is fast becoming an annual highlight and we want to help as many people as possible fly the flag for our service personnel. Lots of our drivers are ex-service personnel and so as well as being the right thing to do, supporting the military really is a natural fit for us. We already offer the UK’s biggest discount for serving personnel and we hope our offer helps as many other people attend the day as possible.”
National Express driver Duane Porteous, served for eight years in the Royal Logistics Corp, doing stints in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Duane, 32, who joined National Express last year and drives coaches into London, said the initiative makes him proud to work for the company.
The dad-of-one who lives in Chelmsford with his son and partner said: “It's brilliant National Express gets behind the military and I’m really proud to work for a company that makes it easier for veterans to get back into work. Armed Forces Day, is a real chance to celebrate the people who dedicate their lives to serving the country. I hope the discount enables as many people possible to visit Guildford and cheer on our forces and importantly, have a great day.”
