Bob’s a coaching superstar
Bob Wilson, National Express coach driver
A Sheffield coach driver has fended off competition from thousands of other drivers to bag a starring role in a new TV campaign by one of the biggest names in transport.
National Express coach driver Bob Wilson who was born and raised in Flockton Avenue, Handsworth, has been handpicked by the company to appear on TV screens across the nation in its new ‘Go Get It!’ TV advert.
Bob, 58, who now lives in London with wife Yvonne was chosen from 2,000 National Express drivers to star in the company’s new commercial, which is part of the UK's largest coach company's campaign to help people travel affordably this spring.
The campaign aims to show people the breath of destinations and experiences open to them when travelling by coach from city breaks to beach trips and music festivals.
It also shows the benefits of choosing coach compared to other modes of transport such as a guaranteed seat and onboard plug sockets.
Alongside the TV advert the coach company is also launching a new blog: blog.nationalexpress.com offering hints and tips for people travelling around the country including top things to do in Sheffield.
Bob, who drives National Express services to and from Heathrow Airport, carrying thousands of passengers a year, was picked by National Express after he impressed staff with his excellent customer service skills, personable nature and 'can do' attitude. He will be appearing alongside just one other coach driver, Lorraine Barnes from Bournemouth.
Now, the Sheffield United fan and dad-of-of three along with wife Yvonne are eagerly anticipating his appearing on TV screens all over the country.
Despite regularly winning praise from customers who travel with him, Bob was surprised to be picked for the TV advert, he said: “I was quite surprised to be asked, quite honoured actually. The film crew had to put a fair bit of make up on me to get me looking my best and from then on I just had to smile.
“I’ve told some of my colleagues and they’ve started calling me Sean Bean because I’m from Sheffield! We're definitely going to be getting the popcorn in to see the advert.”
Bob said his favourite part of the job is mixing with the passengers and getting conversations with them going, he explained:
"I like making people happy and I like to travel - so being a coach driver is the perfect job for me. My attitude to dealing with my passengers is: I like to give to people what I would expect if I was in their shoes. I smile, I’m happy and I like to engage and give conversation. I meet all sorts of people and it’s a really interesting job.”
National Express UK Coach Managing Director Tom Stables said: “National Express has an unrivalled network of coach services covering around a thousand destinations in the UK and With Go Get It! we really wanted to illustrate the sorts of doors this opens to people from city breaks to beach trips and the benefits of great value coach including guaranteed seats and connectivity.
