City of Jackson selects National Express to provide JATRAN Transit and Paratransit Services
The City Council of the City of Jackson, Mississippi unanimously approved the selection of National Express Transit Corporation to provide the City’s JATRAN fixed-route transit and paratransit services, which began earlier this week. The long-term contract has a potential value of more than $52 million.
“We are looking forward to a great partnership with National Express. We strongly believe that they will provide the highest level of customer service and cost effectiveness for our community,” said John Andoh, the City’s Transportation Planning and Transit Services Manager. “This new model will save the city’s general fund $2 million as compared to historical costs for public transit.”
Gary Waits, CEO of National Express Transit Corporation, agrees. “We are honoured to be selected by the City of Jackson to provide these critical services for the community and to initiate what we know will be a long-term partnership with the City.”
National Express was ranked the highest of three firms that included two other multi-national transit contracting and management companies. The contract to manage and operate JATRAN is the company’s first public transportation contract in the State of Mississippi.
