Delivering the gold standard
National Express UK Coach has been recognised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) with a gold award in recognition of excellence in safety.
The coach company achieved the accolade, awarded only to organisations that consistently deliver the highest occupational standards, in the 2015 RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards.
To get the gold standard National Express demonstrated its outstanding safety performance, including well-developed occupational health and safety management systems and outstanding control of risk.
Alongside sustained investment in safety initiatives, crucially National Express showed how safety, which is one of the company’s five core values, is at the heart of business culture and delivered effectively at all levels through its Driving Out Harm programme.
Staff were shown to be empowered to make a difference and recognised for individual contributions to health, safety and welfare at the company’s annual Values Awards.
Focus on health and safety was also shown to be a relentless and ongoing task with clearly defined programmes communicated throughout the business.
RoSPA Awards Manager David Rawlins said: “The RoSPA Awards encourage improvement in occupational health and safety management. Gold standard organisations such as National Express contribute to raising industry standards overall and we congratulate them for leading the way in health and safety.”
National Express Head of Safety Craig Barker said: “Excellence in health and safety is achieved by working with people, it is not done ‘at them’, and so we are really delighted with this gold award which is a reflection of the outstanding commitment to safety by staff throughout National Express. Of course, we can never rest on our laurels – outstanding safety must be delivered daily – and we are already working towards next year’s award.”
The gold award comes after National Express achieved the maximum five stars from a health and safety audit carried out by The British Safety Council and being certified as meeting the internationally-recognised OHSAS 18001 occupational Health and Safety Management Standard.
