National Express adding thousands of seats during Bath rail disruption
National Express is adding thousands of coach seats to its Bath services to support rail passengers who are facing weeks of disruption to train services.
The UK’s largest coach operator is preparing to add nearly 18,000 extra seats on services running between Bath and London during rail engineering works on the First Great Western line, which start this weekend and run for seven weeks (Saturday 18 July - Monday 31 August).
Rail engineering works will reduce the number of trains from Bath Spa to London to one per hour and increase journey times by half an hour as the line between Chippenham and Bath Spa is closed.
Additionally, from Saturday 1 August - Monday 31 August, all railway lines east of Bath will be closed meaning there will be no trains at all running between Westbury, Freshford and Avoncliff and Bath - causing yet more disruption.
National Express meanwhile, will be running hourly coach services between Bath and London, and it will be increasing the number of daily services from 12 to 16 a day each way to support passengers who may be affected by the rail disruption.
The coach company is operating a near round-the-clock service, with the first coach services leaving Bath for London at 3:25 while the last coach back to Bath leaves London Victoria Coach Station at 23:59, giving a huge range of travel times to suit for all types of passengers.
National Express UK Coach Managing Director Tom Stables said: “The prospect of seven weeks of rail disruption is likely to cause a headache to thousands of passengers in Bath and the surrounding area who need to travel to London. However National Express is adding hundreds of extra services to support those who still need to travel, and they can do so affordably and comfortably on our coaches.”
Single fares from Bath to London start at just £5 one way when booked in advance with coaches departing from Bath Bus Station in Dorchester Street just a couple of minutes walk from the railway station.
