The National Express Employee Charity Panel has donated nearly £8,000 to 32 groups and charities across the UK during the first half of 2015.
Bus, coach and rail employees who are actively involved with UK organisations such as Up and Downs, Alzheimer’s Society, Dundee Sea Cadets, and Little Heroes successfully applied to the National Express Employee Charity Panel to request a donation on the back of voluntary work that they personally do to help raise money for their chosen charities or groups.
Employees provide support in their own time and in a range of different ways. Pat Sharman, a cleaner at West Bromwich bus garage, organises an annual charity horse and dog show from start to finish. This year, with the Charity Panel’s support, Pat has managed to raise over £7,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
On hearing that she had secured £500 from the Panel, Pat said:
“Wow! What can I say? I am so, so happy with the £500 we have been allocated from the Panel for Birmingham Children's Hospital. It will take our total well over £7,000 this year which is a fantastic amount and will of course go towards helping some sick children.”
Trevor Sale, a team leader at the bus trim shop, attends weekly training sessions with the Warwickshire Bears Wheelchair Basketball Academy. Although he does not play anymore, he does help by being there every week and using his work-based skills to repair the players' equipment and wheelchairs - all in his own spare time.
Trevor said: “About 18 months ago I saw the Warwickshire Bears bag packing in Solihull to try and raise funds for their club. The wheelchairs and equipment cost a lot of money, so I do as much of the repair work as I can myself. It’s a little different to repairing bus seats, but the guys are so appreciative. The Panel’s £250 donation will certainly help the club - it has really grown in size over the last year, so we’re always looking to get more equipment.”

The National Express Employee Charity Panel supports employees in their own charitable work. The Panel is made up of staff from around the National Express business who meet quarterly to review employee applications and decide which good causes they will support. The Panel awarded almost £17,000 to 65 charities and organisations actively supported by employees throughout 2014.
