Safe Travel at Safe Taysiders
Xplore Dundee provided transport for schoolchildren attending Safe Taysiders 2017
Xplore Dundee is reminding Dundee’s young people how to be safe and avoid anti-social behaviour on and around buses.
This is the operator’s fourth year of taking part in Safe Taysiders, a major safety event which has been taking place for the past three weeks at Baluniefield police station and delivers important messages to Primary Seven pupils from every school in the city. Xplore Dundee has been using the opportunity to educate young people about how dangerous it can be to throw stones or other missiles at vehicles.
Managing Director Elsie Turbyne said:
“Safe Taysiders is a very important date in the calendar for both schools and local organisations such as ourselves. It’s an invaluable opportunity to speak to every P7 pupil in the city about safety issues which they will hopefully take forward with them into secondary school and later life.
“We’re doing our best to spread the message that stone-throwing can hurt people and has serious consequences for those responsible. The safety film has been a very useful tool in helping us to educate Dundee’s young people and we’re already seeing a drop in the number of recorded incidents of broken windows and vandalism.”
A specially edited version of the safety film ‘A Stone’s Throw’ has been made for Safe Taysiders to ensure that all 10 and 11 year olds are aware of the potentially serious consequences of such anti-social activity.
The full-length version of the film, made in partnership with Scottish Fire & Rescue, Police Scotland, Connect 5 Offsite Learning Centre, Dundee City Council Education Department and Scottish Ambulance Service, has been nominated for a transport industry award. It’s shortlisted for the Vulnerable Road Users Safety Award for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport UK Awards. The winners will be selected at a special ceremony next month.
The bus operator has also been pleased to work alongside the Community Safety Partnership to provide transport for Dundee’s schoolchildren attending Safe Taysiders 2017.
