Trends in UK Travel Help A Very Merry Record Breaking Christmas
- Boxing Day was the busiest single day in company history with over 74,000 passenger journeys
- More passengers than ever before on both 25th and 26th December
- 15% increase in passengers during the festive season
- An extra 76,000 seats were added onto services during the festive period, 22,000 more than the previous year
Latest passenger figures from National Express reveal a record breaking 2018 as well as an interesting insight into the changing trends of what the UK public get up to over the Christmas period.
The UK’s largest coach operator carried more passengers than ever before on both 25th & 26th December with 74,000 passenger journeys on Boxing Day alone, making it the busiest single day for travel in the company’s history.
Chris Hardy, managing director for National Express Coach, said: “With families more spread out than ever before and an increasing number of people working over the Christmas period, demand for coach travel at this time keeps getting stronger.
“Nearly 750,000 journeys were taken across our UK wide network during the festive season. That represents a 15% increase on 2017 and tells the story that more and more people need to move across the country for both personal and professional reasons.”
An extra 76,000 seats were added onto services to meet the high demand during the festive period, 22,000 more than the previous year. Busiest days for travel were Wednesday 26, Thursday 27, Sunday 23 and Sunday 30 December when over 238,000 journeys were made.
The addition of extra services offered a lifeline to festive travellers who once again had to contend with widespread disruption on large parts of the rail network. There were no rail services at all on Christmas Day, engineering works affecting trains out of London stations and reduced timetables across all routes over the festive period; resulting in severe disruption and a limited choice for travellers.
Chris Hardy continued: “We’re well known for providing great value travel all year round and we’re conscious that this is especially important to our customers at Christmas.
“But we’re also being chosen because we offer connectivity to over 750 towns and cities across the UK and the reliability and convenience that UK travellers are missing elsewhere.”
National Express is the UK’s largest coach operator, running 1,900 plus services each day (2,100+ on a Friday) to more than 800 locations in 750 towns and cities. It also operates services direct to the terminal for all major UK airports 24 hours a day with 1,100 airport services every day.
