All three of our North American Transit businesses (fixed route, paratransit and disabled transportation) recently held a Hazard Identification Programme (HIP) asking all employees to identify and report any local safety issues.
The event was a huge success with 131 different hazards highlighted. The management team then voted on the top five from each business type for a total of 15 $100 cash prizes. These were awarded at the end of March in luncheons at each participating CSC location.
One idea, forwarded by Roy Browning at Westmoreland Transit in Greenburg, Pennsylvania, suggested that we place a non-skid surface around the bus fuelling area. This solution cost less than $75 and it is now the least slick area of the entire two-acre garage.
All of the employees that submitted actionable hazards received a safety pin to wear on their uniform. Due to the success of the HIP scheme it will now continue throughout 2014.
